This is my packing list for the Worldcon in Chicago this year. It will be hot and humid, and I plan to spend the whole weekend indoors if possible. The hotel is connected to the Illinois Center which has places to eat. In-room internet is $10 a day unless we get a deal before then. I plan to plug in my router and leave it open.

Clothing
Toiletries
Laptop/netbook
Wireless router
Power strip
Various badge ribbons including "Y2K38 OK"
Cell, charger, spare batteries, battery charger
Digital camera maybe...

Oh right, I'm throwing a party in August at Worldcon in Reno. Perhaps I should look for fan videos to show again.

I last successfully held a similar party in Japan: http://anysize.org/~ashi/fan-videos-nippon2007/ (Melbourne didn't have space for me last year).

Any fan-created videos will do if it's in English or has English subtitles!

I cleaned up an old box today and found a 20-year-old student ID:

Younger Todd

and a parody song lyric poster by "Public Anime" which I scanned and typed up the lyrics:

Public Anime. It's a parody of "Loser" by Beck. I even made a favicon for the page. :) The posters were put up at cons in the Bay Area in the early 90s.

I did a little cleaning up today. Images in links as a warning: rather messy for some sensitive eyes.

I plugged in a computer I hadn't touched in years this week. I copied a lot of files off it, but found two nifty sections in particular.

I found the pictures I took with Chilli Dog from 2004, and a music replacement on the Noir OP with a tatu song I made at work in 2002:

So, does anyone want this computer? If not, I'll put it on Craigslist for $20:

Custom built tower PC, AMD Duron (900MHz I think), 768 megs of ram, 120 gig and 200 gig hard drives, cd burner. Ubuntu 10.10. Lots of space in the tower.

Good things:

Son is married now and happy
Wedding went off beautifully
Seattle is a nice place for a honeymoon
Stolen car is back
Wearing kilt to work today

Bad things:

Flat tire this morning, did get spare on in time to make regular train
Caltrain delays made me miss my regular shuttle, did make the later one
Forgot book and earbuds at Luke's. Watched some anime on the train w/o audio... at least there were subs.

A few of you have followed my anime music videos, and I thank you. :)

FoxJones, whose videos I admire, asked me permission a while back to basically re-make one of my videos, and I said yes. He used the same series, music, and basic concept, and it's done now. The concept turns the story of the series upside-down, so it's kind of the heart of the whole thing.

Hrm, the WIPO is trying to write a treaty exception to copyright so blind people will have free access to the written word. Several countries including USA, Canada the EU, and Australia, are trying to block this.

"The main aim of the treaty is to allow the cross-border import and export of digital copies of books and other copyrighted works in formats that are accessible to persons who are blind, visually impaired, dyslexic or have other reading disabilities, using special devices that present text as refreshable braille, computer generated text to speech, or large type. These works, which are expensive to make, are typically created under national exceptions to copyright law that are specifically written to benefit persons with disabilities..."

Whatever your stance on DMCA and copyright, this seems like a very good treaty to me.

Rifftrax!

So, I was discussing Mystery Science Theater 3000 on IRC, when I decided to look for one of the fan-made versions of popular movies. I saw one of Star Trek V at a con years and years ago...

And I found that Mike Nelson, formerly of MST3K, is now making Rifftrax, in much the same style.

http://www.rifftrax.com/

For popular movies, you can download the mp3 file and play it synced with your DVD (manually or using the Windows-only Rifftrax Player). For public domain movies, you can download or stream them pre-synced. You can even upload your own tracks to sell.

I'm looking forward to watching new-and-improved Twilight. I thought it was funny the first time I watched it...

I sent the following email to Chef Elaina today, co-owner of Cafe Soulstice:

Hi. I stopped by Cafe Soustice in San Mateo recently,
and it looks like everything has been cleared away. I
tried calling, but no one answered. The website doesn't
have any updates.

I see you listed as the co-owner, so I was wondering if
you could let me know if Cafe Soulstice is gone forever.
Thanks.

Todd
Cafe Soulstice fan

and got this response:

Hi Todd,
I'm sorry to say that yes, the doors have been closed. We just
didn't have the funds to keep going.
You may or may not know, but there is a business right in Burlingame
called Que se Raw se Raw that serves organic, raw food dishes to go.
It's right next to The Good Earth Natural Food Store.
Also there is Cafe Gratitude in San Francisco if you are up for the
drive.
Good luck to you!

I'm sad to see them go. I used to eat there most every Thursday, days I drove to work. [profile] weepingmoon had a shake there once too.

I have discovered a somewhat healthier way to make very chocolatey milk, soy or otherwise.

I prefer to mix it in the blender so it mixes better.

Put soy milk in the blender and start blending. Add cocoa powder until it looks a little darker than typical chocolate milk. Taste, and add a bit of sugar until it tastes how you like. If you aren't used to much sugar, you can get away with a lot less sugar than you'll find in typical chocolate milk / chocolate soy milk, and at the same time you can make it chocolateyer. Kind of a dark chocolate like flavor. Mmm.

So I heard the alarm clock, but I wanted to think about the dream I'd been having for a moment before it went away. Something to do with driving a van on 280 on Halloween (a street sign said it was Halloween instead of saying the date like I thought it normally did), dropping off my parents... in Mountain View? So I lay there a bit longer, ignoring the alarm. Hmm... the past tense of lie is odd.

Boo started meowing at me. Then he stood up on his hind legs and started licking my elbow. Either he didn't want me to sleep through the alarm clock, or he found it so annoying he wanted me to get up and turn it off. :)

oops.

Doh, screwed up anysize.org while trying to upgrade it remotely. I know, bad idea... I'll fix it tonight.

So, we were walking to Voodoo Donuts, when we passed Dante's bar and saw Richard Cheese was playing tonight. His 9pm show sold out, so he also had a midnight show. Others were not excited enough or not willing enough to stay up that late, so [profile] cheesybunny and I saw his show. He was rather amazing live. I bought two CDs. :)

For those who may not know, Richard Cheese does lounge-style covers of popular songs. A lot of his songs are on Youtube in case you're curious.

The Spongebob theme and Billy Jean really took me by surprise. :)

Voodoo donuts were good too. Their vegan donuts are light, not as dense as Mighty-O. Which isn't better or worse, just different. Mmm.

Resemblance

I hear my heart beating. I hear distant sounds infrequently. I hear my footsteps booming and notice the left sounds different from the right. I hear my own breathing.

It's interesting what I do hear when I wear earplugs + hearing protection earmuffs. There isn't even any construction going on this minute, but I'm having fun like this.

So, having survived a preview of the hot weather to come, I designed two new t-shirts on my Zazzle. You can get some idea just from the URLs:

http://www.zazzle.com/sunlight_depresses_me_tshirt-235060024625395147

http://www.zazzle.com/rain_makes_me_happy_tshirt-235254233443122811

The drawings were done freehand in the Gimp. I envisioned the sun drawn in crayon with a frown instead of the usual smile and went from there, using the paintbrush tool instead of a crayon. :)
